A natural gem company

Palm House Gems builds each piece around its stone. Our first line sets natural Colombian emeralds in collets of 18k yellow gold.

A collet is a closed cup of gold that holds the stone by its whole edge. Collet necklaces were a major form of jewellery in Britain in the Georgian era (1714 to 1830). We will sell directly, online and by private appointment.

An emerald is hard to judge

Two emeralds of the same green can differ greatly in quality. Many are filled with oil or resin, which makes their fissures harder to see. Sellers do not always say so.

Our founder met this problem in Colombia, her home country. She tried to choose an emerald and could not tell what she was offered. She trained as a gemmologist to find out. Each stone we sell will come with a signed record of what she found.

Our standards

Each rule protects the stone, or your trust in it.

Natural only
Every gem we set formed in the earth. We never use synthetic or lab-grown stones.
Unfilled
We select emeralds with no added oil or resin. Traces of the oil used in cutting can remain, and we disclose them.
Chosen for character
Beside colour, clarity, cut and carat, we grade a fifth C: character, the life a stone shows in light.
Durable stones only
We decline any stone with a large fissure, or one that reaches the surface, however fine its colour.
Set by hand
Jewellers at an atelier in Montréal will build each piece and set each stone by hand.
Documented
Each piece will come with a tech card signed by our gemmologist. Take a 10x loupe to your piece and you should find what the card describes.

Who we make for

The established collector

Collectors who already own the classics and now add colour. They know their own style, and they want to know exactly what they are buying.

The new collector
